Acupuncture
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete holistic health care system that has diagnosed, treated, and prevented illness for over 3,000 years. Very fine, sterile acupuncture needles are placed at specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi/Chi (chee) "energy" within the channels or pathways known as "meridians". Improving the flow of energy also improves the circulation of blood. There are over 400 acupuncture points and 14 main meridian pathways. Each meridian is connected to a specific organ. Meridian pathways are like flowing rivers. When the flow is blocked, stagnation occurs, causing pain. A decreased amount of Qi and blood causes a lack of nourishment and fatigue. Trauma, external pathogens, stress, emotions, diet, overwork, lack of exercise, genetics, and environmental conditions can cause obstructions and imbalances in the flow of Qi and blood. Acupuncture works by releasing the obstructions and restoring a balanced flow of energy, which stimulates the body's natural ability to heal.
