Is Acupuncture Safe?
When acupuncture is administered by a skilled licensed professional, acupuncture is considered very safe. Only sterile, disposable, single-use needles are used. This is the law in Florida. In a 2001 study published in Acupuncture Today, no serious adverse effects were found in 34,000 treatments studied. "Significant" adverse effects were found in only 1.25 out of every 1000 treatments (0.001%). These adverse effects included pain, bruising, nausea, sweating, fainting, and avoidable errors such as burns and failure to remove all needles. Considering that the rate of iatrogenic injury (injury caused by modern medical care) is 4- 36% and "the estimated total number of iatrogenic deaths-that is, deaths induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures- in the US annually is 783,936." Acupuncture is very, very safe.
